Few anticipated the subsequent turnaround when Malick Mbaye departed Metz in February. Arriving at the French club in early 2023, the Senegal 2022 CHAN champion found it difficult to create an impression.

After a brief dry spell in March, Mbaye hit form again, scoring against AC Ajaccio (2-1), Dunkerque (1-0), and Guingamp (3-2).
