American Midfielder Johnny Cardoso Close to Atlético Madrid Move
Atlético Madrid are set to finalize the signing of U.S. international Johnny Cardoso this week, sources told GIVEMESPORT. The deal with Real Betis will be worth €30 million plus €2 million in add-ons. Marca first reported the move was close, while GIVEMESPORT had already noted in May that Atleti were leading the race.
Cardoso, 23, was born in New Jersey but raised in Brazil, where he developed at Internacional before joining Betis in January 2024. Since his arrival in La Liga, he has become a pivotal figure in the Betis midfield, playing a key role in their UEFA Conference League campaign and scoring a memorable goal in a win over Real Madrid.
Currently representing the USMNT in the Gold Cup knockout stage, Cardoso is seen as a strong fit for Diego Simeone’s system, with defensive metrics that rank among the best in his position last season.
Tottenham had a pre-set €25 million buy option tied to Giovanni Lo Celso’s loan but backed off as Cardoso made clear he preferred staying in Spain. Wolves showed interest in January, while Juventus and AC Milan also tracked him this summer.
Atlético Madrid finished third in La Liga and qualified for the Champions League.
