América de Cali have announced the hiring of Diego Gabriel Raimondi as their new head coach. The 47-year-old Argentine-Italian will lead the club after years serving as an assistant in top European leagues and national teams. This will be his first job as a head coach.
Raimondi’s résumé includes over 200 matches as an assistant in Italy’s Serie A with Torino and Bologna, and recent stints with Sevilla in Spain and Panathinaikos in Greece. He was also part of Diego Alonso’s staff with Uruguay at the 2022 World Cup, where the team finished third in CONMEBOL qualifying.
Joining him are assistants Juan Carlos Andrés and Andrés Rub, along with fitness coach Alejandro Javier Blasco. América will face Brazilian side Bahia on July 15 in the Copa Sudamericana Round of 32.
The appointment sparked debate in Colombia. Some highlight his European background, while others, like journalist Carlos Antonio Vélez, question his lack of head coaching experience.
