Alex Iwobi Explains the Real Reason Behind Troost-Ekong’s Sudden Super Eagles Retirement
Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi has shared new insight into why former captain William Troost-Ekong unexpectedly retired from Nigeria’s national team — a decision that surprised many fans.
Iwobi revealed that Troost-Ekong chose to step away because he wasn’t getting the playing time he felt he deserved toward the end of his international career. Even though the 32-year-old was included in Nigeria’s provisional 54-man squad for AFCON, he decided to end his Super Eagles journey after making 83 appearances for the country.
Speaking to SportyTV, Iwobi said Troost-Ekong’s exit has created a major void within the squad, especially because of the leadership role he played.
“Towards the end of his Nigerian career, he wasn’t playing as much as he would have liked,”
Alex Iwobi said.
The Fulham midfielder added that Troost-Ekong was more than a defender. He was a unifying presence in the team.
“He will be very missed. He was a big leader for us. We have other leaders who can follow in his footsteps, but we all wish him well,”
Iwobi concluded.
