Alejandro Domínguez Re-Elected as Conmebol President Through 2029

According to AFP, Alejandro Domínguez has been re-elected president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) following the body’s 81st Ordinary Congress held Thursday in Luque, near Asunción. With this renewed mandate, the Paraguayan executive will remain in office until 2029.

“With great passion, I renew my commitment. I’m excited to continue the work we started,” Domínguez declared after securing unanimous backing from member associations. In charge since 2016, his presidency began in the aftermath of the “FIFAGate” scandal that shook global football and led to the arrest of several top officials.

Since then, Conmebol has recovered more than $130 million in misappropriated funds. FIFA president Gianni Infantino praised Domínguez’s performance, calling the re-election well-deserved. “He has done an excellent job leading Conmebol. Football will unite the world,” said Infantino.

Domínguez’s re-election further cements his role as a key figure in international football, aiming to continue institutional reforms and elevate South American football on the global stage.
