Al Ahly Names Mohamed Shawky Assistant Sporting Director to Oversee First-Team Affairs

Egyptian club Al Ahly announced today, Sunday, the appointment of Mohamed Shawky as Assistant Sporting Director in charge of first-team affairs.
In an official statement, Al Ahly confirmed that Mohamed Ramadan, the club’s Sporting Director, had completed the first phase of football sector development, focusing on meeting first-team needs and setting internal work mechanisms.
The club introduced this new role instead of the traditional "Director of Football" position after Swiss coach Marcel Koller rejected the idea of having a Director of Football.
Shawky’s Responsibilities
Shawky will oversee all duties typically handled by a Director of Football, including:
- Enforcing team regulations
- Accompanying the squad in all events and travels
To ensure a smooth transition, Mohamed Ramadan will assist Shawky for a period before Shawky takes full responsibility.
Shawky's Professional Experience
Shawky held the positions of assistant to the Sporting Director and deputy head of Al Ahly's youth sector before to this appointment.
As a player, he played for Middlesbrough (England), Al Masry, Arab Contractors, and Al Ahly in the early 2000s.
He moved into coaching after retirement, serving as:
- Shawky Gharib's assistant coach for Egypt's U-23 national team
- Under Carlos Queiroz and the late Ehab Galal, the senior Egypt national team's assistant coach
