Al Ahly Appoint Jose Riveiro as New Head Coach Ahead of Club World Cup

Al Ahly SC have officially unveiled Spanish tactician Jose Riveiro as their new head coach on a two-year deal, marking a bold new era for Africa’s most decorated club.
Riveiro Replaces Koller
Riveiro steps in following the dismissal of Swiss coach Marcel Koller, who paid the price for a disappointing CAF Champions League campaign.
Despite domestic success under interim boss Emad El Nahhas, the Red Devils opted for a fresh direction ahead of the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
New-Look Technical Team
Sporting director Mohamed Youssef confirmed the full backroom staff:
- Carlos Nodar – Assistant Coach
- Miguel Pepeira – Fitness Coach
- Juan Jose – Goalkeeping Coach
- Sebastian Podsiadly – Performance Analyst
- Emad El Nahhas stays on as assistant coach, ensuring continuity.
Eyes on the Club World Cup
Riveiro’s first major test comes swiftly:
Al Ahly kick off their Club World Cup campaign on June 15 vs Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami. Group A also includes FC Porto and Palmeiras, setting the stage for a high-profile challenge.
From Pirates to Pharaohs
Riveiro earned widespread respect by guiding Orlando Pirates to the CAF Champions League semi-finals before resigning. His move to Al Ahly marks a major step up, as he now leads a side boasting 12 Champions League titles and 45 league crowns.
Ambition Rekindled
The appointment signals Al Ahly’s clear intent:
Restore continental supremacy and establish a presence on the international scene with a tactically sound mind. Riveiro's debut is quickly approaching, and the pressure is mounting.
