Akwa Ibom’s Nest of Champions Remains Nigeria’s Only CAF-Approved Stadium
The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, has once again been recognized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as the only stadium in Nigeria approved to host international matches. The latest CAF publication places the “Nest of Champions” among the best football facilities on the continent.
Reacting to the announcement, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining and upgrading sports facilities to global standards. He expressed delight that the stadium continues to serve as a major venue for international and local events, noting its recent hosting of the Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Rivers United’s CAF Champions League games, and the Davido “5ive Alive” concert.
The 30,000-seater stadium will again welcome fans during the 2025/26 CAF Champions League group stage, with Rivers United set to face RS Berkane of Morocco on November 30, Power Dynamos of Zambia on February 1, and Pyramids FC of Egypt on February 8, 2026.
Bassey praised Governor Umo Eno for his “consistent support and timely release of funds” for facility maintenance, saying, “We are happy and proud that the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium — the Nest of Champions — has been approved and listed among the very best football facilities on the continent.” He added, “Many countries in Africa do not have befitting stadiums and are compelled to play their home matches away from home. We are indeed fortunate to have a facility of this standard.”
He also emphasized that such infrastructure would continue to boost sports tourism and economic growth in the state. CAF’s approval follows its latest inspection and assessment programme, aimed at ensuring safe and standard environments for international football across Africa.
