The former Wolfsburg boss could be set for a return to the dugout.

Details: According to renowned journalist Florian Plettenberg, citing SkySports, Amsterdam's Ajax are in talks with 40-year-old Dutch specialist Paul Simonis following the dismissal of John Heitinga.

Reports suggest that Simonis is the frontrunner for the head coach position, despite the media heavily touting Erik ten Hag as a favorite.

Negotiations between the parties have already begun and are now at an advanced stage.

Paul Simonis has been out of work since leaving his post as Wolfsburg head coach just four months after his appointment.

Throughout his career, Simonis has also served as head coach of Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles and as an assistant manager at Heerenveen.

At the moment, Ajax sit fourth in the Eredivisie and are bottom of their Champions League group, having lost all four opening matches and conceded a staggering 13 goals.

Reminder: No time to hesitate! Erik ten Hag receives offer from Ajax and edges closer to sensational return
