Ajax Football Club has announced the termination of the contract with the team's head coach, Maurice Steijn.

The agreement between the coach and the club was initially set to run until 2026.

"This morning, I met with the management, and we met again at the end of the day. We have come to the conclusion that, for Ajax, this is the best decision, although I consider it a terrible disgrace. Everyone knows that I have done everything possible to bring Ajax back to where this club belongs.

But I have not achieved success. I would like to thank the fans and the people I have worked with here, and I hope that Ajax will soon go on this path," said Steijn.

In 2010, Steijn took over as the interim head coach of his hometown club ADO Den Haag. Later, from 2011 to 2014, he served as the full-fledged head coach. Subsequently, between 2014 and 2019, he coached VVV-Venlo, and had a brief stint with the Emirati club Al-Wahda in Abu Dhabi.

Returning to his homeland, he was the head coach of NAC Breda from 2020 to 2021, and in 2022, he accepted the offer to lead the coaching staff of Sparta Rotterdam. Steijn took charge of Ajax in the summer of this year. After seven matches under his leadership, Amsterdam's team has accumulated five points and currently occupies the second-to-last position in the Eredivisie.

Ajax is the most decorated club in the Netherlands, with 36 Eredivisie titles to their name.
