Ahmed Musa Retires After Record 111 Caps
Nigeria’s most capped player, Ahmed Musa, has announced his retirement from international football, ending a career that lasted almost 15 years with the Super Eagles.
Musa confirmed the decision in an emotional statement, saying wearing Nigeria’s green and white “meant everything to me”… and recalling his rise from a young prospect to a respected leader.
He revealed that he was once invited to the U-20, U-23 and senior teams at the same time, a demanding period he embraced without hesitation.
The 33-year-old leaves international football with 111 caps, a record he called “a great honour”… adding that playing for Nigeria “was always bigger than me.”
Musa said winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and scoring memorable World Cup goals against Argentina and Iceland were defining moments of his journey.
He also reflected on captaining the Super Eagles, saying the armband taught him responsibility, patience and selflessness, especially in supporting younger players.
The forward thanked teammates, coaches, officials and fans, saying their support “meant more to me than you know,” as his exit ends months of speculation.
It follows William Troost-Ekong’s exit as Nigeria prepare for AFCON.
