After World Cup qualification failure. Italy appoints temporary Gattuso successor
The rebuilding process for the Italian national team is gaining momentum following their disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign. With Gabriele Gravina's resignation now confirmed, the spotlight has shifted to finding an interim head coach to lead the Azzurri until a permanent successor is appointed.
According to Sportmediaset, the frontrunner for the role is Silvio Baldini, currently at the helm of Italy’s U-21 squad. It's expected that he could step in to guide the senior team during this transitional phase.
The situation is further complicated by the upcoming schedule: before the FIGC presidential elections set for June 22 in Rome, Italy faces two friendly matches. The federation is under pressure to swiftly appoint a manager who can take charge for these imminent fixtures.
Interestingly, Italy has followed a similar path before. Back in 2018, after failing to qualify for the World Cup, the interim coach role was also handed to a youth national team specialist—Luigi Di Biagio—before a permanent manager was chosen.
