After the World Cup qualifying disaster. Major changes looming in Italy’s Serie A
The Italian Footballers’ Association (AssoCalciatori) has put forward an initiative to introduce new legislation that would require Serie A clubs to include Italian players in their squads.
According to the organization’s president, Umberto Calcagno, the Italian Football Federation currently lacks the legal means to enforce such a rule, meaning political intervention may be necessary to make it a reality.
This proposal comes in the wake of a deep crisis in Italian football following their third consecutive World Cup absence. The association argues that one of the main issues is the decreasing playing time afforded to homegrown footballers at the top level, which directly impacts the quality of the national team and the development of young talent.
As an example, some clubs maintain only a minimal presence of Italian players. It’s highlighted that several sides are increasingly relying on foreign imports, and in extreme cases—such as at Como, where an Italian outfield player logged just a single minute on the pitch over an entire season—the scale of the problem becomes starkly clear.
