After the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Gernot Rohr looks to the future
The Benin national team coach wants to revive the team's momentum and lay new foundations during the international break in March 2026.
The Benin Cheetahs will play Palestine on 27 March and Guinea on 31 March in an international friendly tournament in Morocco. For this gathering, the German tactician expects some familiar faces to return and some new ones to join his squad. As usual, Gernot Rohr is planning a pre-selection phase with an expanded squad in order to evaluate the players as thoroughly as possible before making his final decision. This is what he told the local media outlet ‘Joueurs Béninois’.
We are now entering the post-2025-2026 Africa Cup of Nations period. We have two very interesting matches coming up in March and we are already starting to assemble the squad for these games.
As usual, there will first be an extended squad for pre-selection, and then we will choose the players who will have the chance to prove themselves in important warm-up matches. These are not friendly matches: they are preparatory matches with objectives to fulfil. First, we need to rediscover our team spirit, our mindset, our solidarity and our football.
For this new season that is about to begin, we will also have the chance to welcome back some players who were unable to be there last time due to injuries or other problems. We will also have the opportunity to see one or two new players.
