African Nations League: format, zones, final phase, what you need to know about the new CAF competition
The official launch of the competition is scheduled for 2029.
The African Nations League will take place every two years. Following the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football on Friday 13 February 2026, the president of the organisation, Patrice Motsepe, gave details about this new tournament, which will begin in a few years' time.
During his press conference, the CAF president explained that the competition will involve all African nations. However, it will be divided into geographical zones. There will be the North Africa zone, East Africa zone, West Africa zone and Central-Southern Africa zone.
The teams from each zone will compete against each other, and the champions from each geographical zone will then compete in a final phase to determine the continental winner.
