African Legends Set to Lead CHAN 2024 Draw in Nairobi
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed three African football legends—Hassan Wasswa (Uganda), Mrisho Ngasa (Tanzania), and McDonald Mariga (Kenya)—to oversee the draw for the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The draw will take place on Wednesday, January 15, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, at 20:00 local time. It is an important milestone in the planning of the competition, which will take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from February 1 to February 28, 2025.
Wasswa, a veteran of 75 international appearances, had a distinguished career in Turkey and Saudi Arabia before retiring in 2021. Ngasa, Tanzania’s all-time leading scorer, earned over 100 caps and played for top Tanzanian clubs as well as abroad in South Africa and Oman. Mariga, Kenya’s first UEFA Champions League player, boasts a glittering career with Inter Milan, including a UEFA title, Serie A trophy, and FIFA Club World Cup.
19 teams in all, including co-hosts Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania and reigning champions Senegal, are awaiting the formal tournament schedule, which will be decided during the draw. An intriguing lineup for the eighth CHAN tournament will be completed when two more teams reserve their berths.
