Africa Embraces VAR: South Africa and Tanzania Lead the Way in Domestic Leagues
Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will be introduced in South Africa's and Tanzania's domestic leagues in a daring attempt to conform to international football standards.
South Africa steps into the VAR era
Beginning with the upcoming season, South Africa will formally introduce VAR in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie acknowledged the news, stating that the South African Football Association (SAFA) is spearheading the integration process in accordance with FIFA rules.
An official tender for service providers is expected within days, with funding and referee training already secured. McKenzie praised the collaboration between SAFA and the PSL, stating, “The money is available, and the necessary training for referees has also been budgeted for.”
Tanzania follows suit
In East Africa, the Tanzania Premier League will introduce VAR in select high-profile matches, including title deciders. The Tanzanian Football Federation is working with international experts to train local referees.
Morocco led the way
In 2019, Morocco became the first country in Africa to use VAR domestically. Egypt did the same in 2020. The continent's wider use of VAR was made possible by its early acceptance.
