Malian authorities have arrested a self-proclaimed “witch doctor” accused of defrauding football supporters of more than €33,000 after promising to use spiritual rituals to help the national team defeat Senegal and reach the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The suspect, locally identified as a marabout known as Mr Sinayogo, allegedly claimed he possessed supernatural powers capable of influencing match outcomes. Reports suggest he targeted hopeful fans through social media and word of mouth, urging them to contribute money to fund special ceremonies he said would guarantee Mali’s victory.

In total, Sinayogo is believed to have collected approximately €33,500 (22 million CFA francs) from supporters eager to see their team progress in the tournament.

However, following Mali’s defeat to Senegal, anger among fans quickly escalated. A group reportedly gathered at his residence, prompting police to step in and remove him from the scene to prevent further unrest.
