AFCON Qualifier: Taiwo Awoniyi Replaces Victor Osimhen In Super Eagles Squad For AFCON 2027 Qualifier
Coventry City striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been called up as a replacement for Victor Osimhen in Nigeria's squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the change on Sunday, September 20, after Osimehen was ruled out of both fixtures as he continued his recovery from a right adductor muscle strain injury.
Awoniyi, 29, returns to the Super Eagles squad after his last appearance in October 2024. He will join Eric Challe's attacking options, including Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Akor Adams, Samuel Chukwueze and Tolu Akorede.
Nigeria will host Madagascar in Uyo on Friday September 25, before traveling to face Guinea-Bissau in the second qualifier match on Tuesday September 29.
