AFCON 2027 Qualifier: Gambia Beat Ghana 4-2 to End 33-Year Wait for Victory

The Gambia produced a stunning comeback at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, beating Ghana 4-2 to secure their first victory over the Black Stars in 33 years in an unforgettable AFCON 2027 qualifier.

Ghana appeared to be cruising after taking a two-goal lead inside the opening 35 minutes.

Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 27th minute before Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the Black Stars' advantage six minutes later.

However, The Gambia quickly turned the game around before the break.

Mohamed Badamosi reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 37th minute, giving the visitors a much-needed lifeline. Omar Colley then levelled the scores five minutes later to send the two teams into half-time at 2-2.

The Gambia completed the turnaround after the break when Colley capitalised on a defensive mistake from Gideon Mensah to put the visitors 3-2 ahead.

Ghana pushed for an equaliser but could not find a way through. The Gambia then sealed a memorable victory in stoppage time, with Colley completing his hat-trick in the 92nd minute.

The 4-2 victory gives The Gambia six points from their opening two AFCON 2027 qualifying matches. Ghana, meanwhile, have suffered consecutive defeats and remain without a point in Group C.
