CAF’s disciplinary verdict after the chaotic AFCON 2025 final in Rabat has sparked fresh controversy instead of closure. Africa’s football governing body issued over $1 million in fines to Senegal and Morocco, but many critics say the Atlas Lions received only a “slap on the wrist.”

Footage of captain Achraf Hakimi and Ismael Saibari trying to snatch towels from Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy went viral, leading to a $200,000 fine. Supporters also questioned the $15,000 laser penalty. “As long as the Towel team (Morocco) has also been sanctioned I'm ok, but the laser fine of $15,000 is too little,” one fan said.

Confusion grew after Morocco won the Fair Play Trophy despite fines for unsportsmanlike acts. “How did Morocco win the fair play trophy…?” another asked.
