AFCON 2025: CAF Approves 28-Man Squads for 2025 AFCON to Boost Team Flexibility and Performance
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially approved an expanded squad size of 28 players for all teams competing in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This adjustment marks a significant shift from previous tournaments and is aimed at giving participating countries greater flexibility throughout the month-long competition.
CAF explained that the expanded squad rule will help national teams better manage player fitness, injuries, workload, and any health-related challenges that may arise during the tournament. In addition to the larger player list, teams will also be allowed to register up to 17 technical staff members, ensuring full support for coaching, medical, and performance departments.
All 24 qualified nations are required to submit their final 28-man rosters by December 11, ahead of kickoff. The 2025 AFCON will take place in Morocco, running from December 18, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
