A woman will serve as the main referee for an English Premier League match for the first time

The main referee for an English Premier League (EPL) match will be a woman for the first time in history.
Rebecca Welch, 40 years old, has been appointed for the 18th round EPL fixture between Fulham and Burnley, scheduled for December 23rd.
Welch began her refereeing career in 2010 and in 2023 became the first female referee to officiate a Championship match. In November, she served as the fourth official in the EPL match between Fulham and Manchester United.
Additionally, the match between Sheffield United and Fulham on December 26th will be officiated by Sam Allison. This appointment is notable as Allison will be the first black referee in the EPL in 15 years.
Fulham currently holds the tenth position in the EPL standings. Before the match against Burnley, they are set to face Newcastle in the league on December 16th and Everton in the English League Cup on December 19th.
Burnley, presently in 19th place, is battling for survival. Ahead of their game at Craven Cottage, they will play against Everton on December 16th.
