A truly unfortunate incident.
Details: In yesterday's Europa League group stage Matchday 5 fixture, Spanish side Real Betis hosted Dutch club Utrecht, but the start of the game turned into a nightmare for the home fans.
The drama unfolded in the 10th minute, when Betis midfielder Sofyan Amrabat missed the ball and accidentally struck his own teammate, club captain Isco, who had only just recovered from a previous injury.
The collision left both players hurt. Isco was forced off in the 10th minute, unable to leave the field under his own power and needing support from the medical staff, visibly in tears. Amrabat was substituted five minutes later, unable to continue due to discomfort in his leg.
Just a week ago, Isco had returned from a severe shin fracture he suffered back in August.
The extent and nature of the injuries sustained by Isco and Amrabat remain unknown.
The match itself ended in a 2-1 victory for Betis, thanks to goals from Cucho and Ez Abde. For the visitors, Derry Murkin found the net.
