Referees will now have it a bit easier.

Details: Today it was announced that FIFA has officially approved additional changes to the VAR system for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

According to the new rules, VAR referees can now recommend a review if:

  • VAR determines that a corner kick was incorrectly awarded.
  • A player receives a yellow card that, upon video review, is deemed to have been an incorrect decision by the referee.

Behind the scenes, FIFA also discussed additional rule changes, but the special commission approved only the two mentioned above.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held across three countries: the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament kicks off on June 11, 2026.
