A new era begins: MLS to switch to European season format in 2027
MLS has officially announced a globally significant reform—starting from the summer of 2027, the league will adopt a 'summer–spring' calendar, synchronizing its schedule with the world's top leagues. This decision is one of the most pivotal in the history of American soccer and has already received initial approval. Final negotiations are currently underway with the league's Players Association.
Alongside the switch, MLS plans to revamp the structure of the regular season, retaining the unique elements of North American sports while boosting its international competitiveness.
Under the new schedule, the 2027/28 season will kick off in mid-to-late July and finish in May with the playoffs and the MLS Cup final. The league will introduce a winter break—from mid-December to early February. Before this global transition, there will be a short transitional season from February to May 2027—just 14 matchdays and playoffs.
