Erik ten Hag is making his return to football operations after an unsuccessful coaching stint at Bayer Leverkusen, where he was dismissed just three matches into his tenure.

Details: Erik ten Hag will officially join Twente as technical director starting February 1, 2026, on a contract running until mid-2028. He will replace Jan Streuer, who has announced his intention to leave the club after the current season. Ten Hag will begin working with the Dutch club ahead of the new campaign.

It’s worth noting that Ten Hag returns to the club where he began his professional playing career. Erik himself commented:

“It’s a great honor for me to return to Twente, the club I supported as a child. My football and coaching journey started here. Drawing on my experience in youth development, team building, and fostering a culture of professional sport, I want to work together with the board, management, and coaching staff to strengthen the club’s technical foundation and help it reach its full potential.”

Club CEO Dominic Scholten added:

“We are delighted to welcome Erik ten Hag to Twente. He will succeed Jan Streuer, who over the past five and a half years has made a huge contribution to the club’s success. Erik brings outstanding football experience and has always maintained a close connection with Twente. He has worked here as a youth coach, head of the academy, assistant, and later as head coach and technical manager at renowned national and international clubs.”

Currently, Twente sit sixth in the Eredivisie and are fighting for a place in European competitions.

Reminder: Kees Smit from AZ Alkmaar is the top candidate for the central midfield role at Real Madrid.
