A legendary record! Diego Simeone writes his name into La Liga history
Atlético head coach Diego Simeone has achieved a historic milestone. Following the victory over Levante in the 11th round of La Liga, the Argentine drew level with Luis Aragonés for the most wins in the history of the competition.
According to Opta, Simeone now has 344 victories in 565 Spanish league matches. Another 123 games ended in draws, while his teams suffered defeat on 98 occasions. Aragonés recorded the same number of La Liga wins during his coaching career, although he needed 756 matches to reach that mark.
In doing so, Simeone matched the legendary Spanish coach's record while having managed 191 fewer matches. The Atlético boss now has the chance to move into sole possession of first place in the all-time standings as early as the next round.
The match against Levante itself ended in a 2-0 victory for the Madrid side. Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone got on the scoresheet. Thanks to this result, Atlético not only continued its push for the top positions in the league but also gave its coach a special reason to be proud.
