A Georgia basketball player specifically wanted to throw in his own hoop. Why?

Yesterday in Riga, the Group B1 qualifiers for the Olympic basketball tournament concluded with an extraordinary and rare incident.
At the end of the match against the Philippines, Georgian player Goga Bitadze attempted to score an own basket despite his team leading 96-94.
But why did he do that? The reason is that Georgia needed a victory with a margin of at least 19 points to advance to the playoff stage of the qualifiers. By attempting to score an own basket, Bitadze aimed to send the game into overtime, thereby providing his team with additional minutes to achieve the necessary point differential.
Incredibly, Bitadze missed the basket from just a meter away without any opposition.
As a result, the Philippines and Latvia advanced to the playoff stage of the qualifiers.
