A former footballer was arrested for transporting cocaine. The weight of the shipment is impressive

Footballers at the end of their careers go to various extremes, even some not quite legal, for which justice catches up with them sooner or later.

As Vandaaginside reports, former Netherlands player Ronny Stam has been charged by Dutch prosecutors with transporting over two tonnes of cocaine between 2021 and 2022. The 40-year-old suspect himself has been in custody since as far back as June.

Over the summer, police searched six houses and a camping cabin. The searches resulted in the seizure of €100,000 in cash, six luxury watches, three cars, jewellery, while bank accounts, three cars, three houses and a yacht were seized.

It is not yet known what punishment Stam may face, but his parents, girlfriend and brother are suspected of conspiracy along with him, but he is the only one under arrest.

As a footballer, he won the Dutch championship with Twente in 2010 and the FA Cup with Wigan in 2013. Stam was also called up to the Dutch national team for a friendly against Ukraine in July 2010, but did not play for the national team then due to injury.
