A defender like no other! Sekhukhune coach stunned by his new star
Sekhukhune United coach Papi Zothwane has made an extraordinary admission about one of his players. The South African tactician believes he has discovered a defender whose combination of qualities is something he has rarely encountered in football.
Details: Speaking to iDiski Times, Zothwane singled out Ndongani O'Niel for his impressive adaptation and exceptional abilities. The coach said: "I think he’s adjusted very well. He’s one quality player that I've never seen in the longest time, a defender that can play with both legs, can anticipate, can jump and in the set-pieces again can give you something." His enthusiastic assessment highlighted the defender's versatility, awareness and aerial ability.
The praise is particularly striking because Zothwane did not focus on one isolated aspect of the player's game. Instead, he identified a rare combination of defensive qualities. Being comfortable with both feet gives a defender more options when receiving possession, while anticipation and positioning can help him respond to danger before opponents create clear scoring opportunities.
O'Niel's aerial strength also impressed the Sekhukhune coach. Zothwane believes the player can offer something valuable during set pieces, where defenders must contribute at both ends of the pitch. His comments suggest that O'Niel has already made a positive impression on the technical staff, although the coach did not make specific predictions about his future career.
It's worth noting that Zothwane took charge of Sekhukhune United after the departure of Cedric Kaze in September 2026. The coaching change followed a difficult sequence of results against Orlando Pirates. As the team continues adapting to his approach, the emergence of reliable defensive options could become an important part of its development.
