A boost for Emery! Aston Villa seals major transfer for Atletico defender

The Birmingham club has officially strengthened its defensive line ahead of the new season's kick-off.

Details: Aston Villa management has reached a full agreement with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of 24-year-old left-back Matteo Ruggeri. The fixed transfer fee is set at €25 million, with an additional €1.5 million in potential bonuses. The Italian defender has already agreed to the terms of a long-term personal contract and successfully passed his medical. Villa boss Unai Emery is counting on him as a key addition to revitalise the team's flanks.

Matteo Ruggeri is a product of Atalanta's academy, where he won the Europa League. In the summer of 2025, the defender moved to Atletico Madrid, but spent just one season in La Liga before deciding to continue his career in England.

Notably, during the 2025/26 season, Ruggeri made 47 appearances in all competitions for Atletico, providing 7 assists. According to reputable portal Transfermarkt, the Italian's market value is estimated at €28 million.
