As France joyfully prepares for the 2024 Olympics, fans of the legendary football club Bordeaux have little to celebrate.
Today, Bordeaux officially announced that due to financial problems, the club has been relegated from Ligue 2 to National 1, the third tier of French football.
However, the situation could have been much worse. Bordeaux faced the risk of losing its professional status entirely due to its debts. The league has allowed Bordeaux to revise its budget for the new season and start in the third tier.
If the club fails to secure an additional 40 million euros in the coming days, it could be further demoted to the fourth or fifth division.
Bordeaux, six-time champions of France and one of the country's most popular clubs, last won Ligue 1 in 2009.
The previous season, Bordeaux finished 13th in Ligue 2.
