A Belgian Union Saint-Gilloise player receives Bart Simpson-style punishment
Union midfielder Loïc Lapoussin faced an unconventional punishment from his club following controversial remarks about Cercle Brugge. In a video posted on Union's Instagram account, Lapoussin is seen repeatedly writing the phrase "Union — Cercle" on a board, just like Bart Simpson from the legendary cartoon series!
This rather peculiar punishment was connected to a scandal Lapoussin caused earlier. After the match against Cercle Brugge, the player made highly disrespectful comments about the opponent's stadium.
"With all due respect to Cercle, these surroundings really don't make me want to play football. It's no fun for our supporters to come here either. There is a world of difference between playing at Club Brugge's stadium and playing here," said Lapoussin.
As a result, the player had to not only accept his punishment but also publicly apologize to Cercle Brugge: "I want to apologise to our friends from Cercle Brugge, and to the Unionists, for my comments after the game on the stadium and the fans."
It seems the lesson has been learned, and such incidents are unlikely to happen again.
