Cubarsí is now just one step away from a scenario that not long ago seemed nothing short of fantasy.

Details: SPORT has voiced a bold opinion: if Spain defeats Argentina in the World Cup final, the Ballon d'Or should go to Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí, not his higher-profile teammate Lamine Yamal.

The article's authors stressed that such a choice couldn't be called madness or an exaggeration. Alongside Cubarsí, they also singled out Luis de la Fuente, who, if Spain triumphs, would deserve the prize for world's best coach.

"If Spain wins the World Cup, Pau Cubarsí must win the Ballon d'Or! If Spain lifts the trophy, it would be neither madness nor exaggeration to give Luis de la Fuente the award for best coach in the world, and the Ballon d'Or to Pau Cubarsí," the statement said.

Cubarsí truly has a powerful team argument: Spain has reached the final conceding just one goal in seven matches, with the 19-year-old defender forming the team's central defensive partnership alongside Aymeric Laporte.

Now, the fate of a potentially historic award could be decided on July 19, when Spain faces Argentina in the World Cup final.

Reminder: “We shut them up!” – Pau Cubarsí comments on victory over France.
