88 minutes with a man down! Botafogo wins the Copa Libertadores for the first time in history
On Saturday, November 30, the final match of the Copa Libertadores took place between Brazilian clubs Botafogo and Atlético Mineiro, competing for the title of the best team in South America.
The start of the match was a nightmare for Botafogo: in the second minute, midfielder Gregore was sent off for a rough foul. Interestingly, this only spurred the team on, as they led 2-0 at halftime thanks to goals from Luis Henrique and Alex Telles.
During the break, Gabi Milito made changes to freshen up the team, and Atlético quickly pulled one goal back. In the remaining time, Botafogo not only managed to withstand Atlético's pressure but also scored a third goal.
Copa Libertadores Final
Atlético Mineiro 1–3 Botafogo
Goals: Eduardo Vargas (47') — Luis Henrique (35'), Telles (44'), Santos (90+7)
Notably, Botafogo won the Copa Libertadores for the first time in its history. Their only previous international trophy was the 1993 Copa CONMEBOL.
