The Republic of Ireland pulled off a real sensation, snatching a playoff spot in the dying minutes of their clash against Hungary.
Up until the 80th minute, Hungary were leading 2-1—a result that would have suited them just fine. But Ireland needed nothing less than a win to leap into second place in the group and keep their World Cup dreams alive. First, AZ Alkmaar's striker struck twice to level the score, and then, in the 90+6th minute, he hammered home the winner that sent Hungary crashing out and kept Ireland's hopes burning.
Remarkably, it was Parrott who just days ago secured victory for the Irish against Portugal, netting both goals. His tally of five goals in the last two matches has kept Ireland firmly in the hunt for a World Cup berth.
