40 and Still Dominating: Onyango Praised Ahead of Possible Club World Cup Return

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has paid glowing tribute to Denis Onyango, hailing the legendary goalkeeper's ongoing impact both on and off the pitch as the club closes in on an eighth straight Betway Premiership title.

Club Legend Still Delivering

At 40 years old, Onyango remains a pillar of consistency for Sundowns, having made 12 appearances across all competitions this season and keeping 8 clean sheets — including in the recent 3-0 win over Stellenbosch FC.

"He is big and he is huge — in his heart and in his brains, Together with Ronwen [Williams], they make a wonderful team. But we also have Reyaad Pieterse, Jody February and Sanele Tshabalala pushing every day" Cardoso told reporters after the win.

A Respected Figure

Cardoso emphasized that Onyango’s role extends beyond his performances on the pitch, highlighting his leadership in the dressing room and influence over younger players.

“Having a big man among us is very important. Denis is alive and kicking, as he usually says, We had to protect him today after a knock in contact — it’s normal, but he always steps up when needed” the coach added.

Future Still Bright?

Onyango's comeback occurs at a pivotal moment. Onyango has taken over admirably as Ronwen Williams recovers from his injury. According to reports, he might be included in Sundowns' roster for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States in 2025. He might possibly play as a backup the following season.

One Title Away from History

The Ugandan international is already the most decorated player in PSL history with 11 league titles (3 with SuperSport United and 8 with Sundowns). Should Sundowns secure at least a point against Chippa United on Wednesday, Onyango will add a 12th league medal to his historic career.
