2027 AFCON Qualifiers: Kenya national team players boycott training

With just a few days to go before the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, tensions are said to have arisen within the Kenyan squad.

The Harambee Stars are said to have decided to boycott training as they prepare for their first two matches of the qualifying campaign. Kenya are due to host Eritrea on 26 September before travelling to face Guinea on 1 October.

However, in the run-up to these two matches, the Kenyan internationals are said to have refused to take part in training. The reasons behind this tension are unpaid bonuses and grievances regarding their working conditions.

According to reports, the players wish to meet directly with President William Ruto or officials from the Ministry of Sport to discuss their concerns. They are reportedly unwilling to resume training as normal until a meeting with the authorities has taken place.

This situation comes at a time when Kenya is one of the host nations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Tanzania and Uganda are the two other co-hosts of the competition, which will take place between June and July 2027.
