2025 AFCON: South Africa's preliminary 55-man squad has been unveiled

The preliminary 55-man South African squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was unveiled by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos on Monday. Contrary to expectations, Thembinkosi Lorch is not included.

According to Broos, the 32-year-old Wydad Casablanca star does not represent the future of the team. However, the squad does include Tylon Smith, a 20-year-old Amajita defender who plays for Queens Park Rangers' reserve team in the English Championship, and Shandre Campbell of Belgian giants Club Brugge.

Broos is expected to reduce his squad to 23 players "in the coming days," according to the SAFA statement released on Monday. Bafana Bafana are in Group B with Egypt, Angola, and Zimbabwe for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, which will take place in Morocco from December 21 to January 18.
