In the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in U-20 hockey, quarter-final matches are underway. In one of the matchups, the finalists from the previous year, the Czech Republic and Canada, faced each other. In 2023, it was the Canadians who secured the coveted gold medals.

In this game, the Czech Republic performed exceptionally well in the first period. The European team netted a goal in the eighth minute. Three minutes later, the Czechs had the opportunity to score again, but Dominik Rymon failed to convert the penalty shot. Two minutes before the end of the first period, however, the Czech Republic did manage to double their lead.

In the second period, Canada staged a comeback. The Canadians launched an offensive, and firstly, Wood narrowed the gap on the fourth minute, followed by Furlong equalizing the score on the 17th minute. In the third period, Canada continued to press on the Czech goal, but they couldn't find the back of the net.

As the end of the match approached, the Czechs leveled the game and started responding with attacks. A rather unexpected turn of events occurred in this quarter-final match. With 11 seconds remaining, Jakub Shtantsl took a shot, and after a deflection, the puck flew into the net.

The Czech Republic secured an unexpected victory of 3-2, thereby avenging their loss in last year's World Junior Ice Hockey Championships final. Canada exits in the quarter-finals and goes without medals in 2024.
