The Senegalese midfielder will no longer play as a professional footballer.

Cheikhou Kouyaté has decided to call time on his career at the age of 36. The Senegalese player brings an important chapter in the history of the Lions of Teranga to a close.

With the national team, Kouyaté has left a lasting mark: 92 caps and four goals. The midfielder took part in five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and two FIFA World Cups, in 2018 and 2022.

His greatest achievement remains the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, won with Senegal, the country’s first-ever continental title.

At club level, he also enjoyed a distinguished career, particularly in Europe, playing for Anderlecht, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and, most recently, Amedspor.

The announcement of his retirement prompted a tribute from the Senegalese Football Federation.

“The legend Cheikhou Kouyaté has announced his retirement after a career marked by commitment, leadership and an unwavering love for the national shirt.

“Thank you for all these years of dedication and the emotions we have shared. Your name will remain forever etched in the history of Senegalese football.

“Thank you for everything, Cheikhou!”
