VIDEO. For the first time in history, Canada wins the Billie Jean King Cup

The final matches of the Billie Jean King Cup were played in Seville, Spain.

In the decisive game of the tennis tournament, the Canadian team beat the representatives of Italy and for the first time in history took the main trophy of the World Championship.

The winner was determined thanks to two singles matches.

First, Marina Stakusic, world number 258 from Canada, took to the court and, unexpectedly for many, confidently defeated Martina Trevisan (Italy, 43) with a score of 7:5, 6:3.

In the second match, Leila Fernandez (Canada, 35) was able to win an even more confident victory over the Italian Yasmine Paolini, the 30th racket in the world. The meeting ended with a score of 6:2, 6:3.

Thus, the last planned doubles match between Gabriela Dabrowski/Leila Fernandez (Canada) and Elisabetta Cocciaretto/Martina Trevisan (Italy) had no tournament significance and was decided not to be held.
