The Ghanaian national team is directing keen attention towards several young players of Ghanaian origin. Currently, their focus has fallen upon the ascent of the midfielder Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United. Randy Abby, a member of the executive council of the country's football association, has included the 18-year-old talent in the roster of players whom they will strive to persuade to represent them instead of England.

As part of a broader Ghanaian policy, it is imperative that they consider all "eligible talents" for selection to the national team, including those, like Mainoo, born abroad.

Abby stated in an interview with The Times:

"The Ghana Football Association is keen on monitoring, attracting, and persuading all suitable talents for its various national teams. Kobbie is undoubtedly one of these remarkable talents, and the association would like to collaborate with him and many others like him."

Mainoo was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, and in recent years, he has already represented England in various age groups from under 17 to under 19. However, both of his parents hail from Ghana, granting him the right to also represent the West African country. Consequently, the player has the opportunity, if he desires, to switch international allegiance to Ghana.

According to FIFA regulations, a player may change international affiliation between countries for which he is eligible, provided he has not played more than three official matches for the senior team before turning 21. There are no age restrictions for participation in friendly matches, meaning Mainoo could debut for the England national team—even in a competitive setting—and still retain the right to choose Ghana later, or vice versa, as long as he continues to meet the criteria.

Mainoo has featured in the starting lineup in Manchester United's last eight matches in all competitions, culminating in his goal against Wolverhampton on Thursday, securing victory for his team.
