Prediction on game
On January 21, St Mary's Stadium (Southampton) will host the match of the 21st round of the English Premier League, in which Southampton will compete with Aston Villa. The battle will start at 16:00 CET.
The club seems to have gained momentum after all. Nothing could help for a pretty long period of time: neither the replacement of the coach, Ralph Hasenhüttl, to Nathan Jones, nor the long pause for the World Cup. “The Saints” continued to lose the major part of the matches in the winter, as they had done it in the autumn. Having knocked out Lincoln City in the EFL Cup, the team did not have any success in the Premier League – no points in the matches against Brighton, Fulham and even in the game with Nottingham Forest, which, as a result, turned into a direct competitor in the struggle for survival. It goes without saying that then “the Saints” beat Crystal Palace and even Manchester City in January, but those victories were in cup matches. However, such successes seem to have encouraged the team. It finally won in the championship, moreover, that happened in the duel against a principal opponent.
The team replaced its mentor that is similar to the next opponent. In Birmingham, young Steven Gerrard was replaced by more experienced Unai Emery in the autumn. And this move looks justified in terms of tournament results. Of course, there were failures under the rule of the Spanish specialist, and even shocking ones, such as a 1-2 defeat in the match with almost unknown Stevenage in the FA Cup. But maybe it was a decision of a new manager to focus exclusively on the Premier League. There, the results, starting from November, are quite decent: 4 wins in 6 previous matches. Moreover, only Wolverhampton managed not to lose to “the Villans” in January, having played with a 1-1 draw. On January 13, the team beat Leeds in a pretty confident way. The fact that Bamford reduced the gap to a minimum and made the opponent be a little bit nervous in the last minutes of the game does not even matter.
The statistics of head-to-head matches
Aston Villa has won 3 of its four previous head-to-head matches. The victories of the previous calendar year are pretty confident: 4-0 in March and 1-0 in September.
Bookmakers believe that the opponents are nearly equal. Still, Aston Villa is more stable, thus, we bet on its victory with “a 0 goal handicap” (odd: 1.83).
