On March 23, Anton Malatinský Stadium (Trnava) will host the match of the first round of the Euro 2024 Qualification, in which Slovakia will compete with Luxembourg. The battle will start at 20:45 CET.
Slovakia
The team took part in the final tournaments three times in the interval from 2010 to 2020 and reached the 1/8 final level twice there. Still, the previous Euro, which was characterized by loyal regulations and started with a victory in the match against Poland, ended for it at the group stage. Speaking about the previous UEFA Nations League, the Slovakia national team, which had been relegated to League C, got only 7 points (4 points in the matches with Belarus and 3 points in the battles against Azerbaijan). At the same time, both matches with Kazakhstan were lost, and it was Magomed Adiev’s wards who were promoted. Then, Štefan Tarkovič’s team did not win in the control matches – the draws in the battles with Montenegro and Chile. By the way, Marek Hamšík had his last match for the national team against the Latin Americans – it will have to do without a long-term leader.
Luxembourg
The team is gradually rising in both the official and “unspoken” rankings. Not so long ago, it was considered an outsider, like most of the national teams of small countries. Recently, being under the rule of Luc Holtz, it has been possible to improve its state of things. It goes without saying that the team has not become “new Iceland”, and has not even reached the level of Albania, but still the previous qualification resulted in 3 wins in 8 matches. Moreover, Gerson Rodrigues and the company lost only 1 match out of 6 in the previous UEFA Nations League – that was a defeat made by the favourite of the quartet, Turkey. The second match with it brought a 3-3 draw. At the same time, confirming its current status, Luxembourg took two victories in the matches with Lithuania, and after the away win in the game against the Faroe Islands there could have been a home success, however, the higher mentioned struggle ended in a spectacular 2-2 draw. Moreover, the same score was repeated in the battle with strong Hungary in November, which was followed by the goalless draw with Bulgaria in three days.
The statistics of head-to-head matches
All four official matches of the qualification (in 2004-2005 and in 2015) were won by Slovakia. Still, Luxembourg won the friendly match at the home arena in 2011.
Predictions
Bookmakers consider Slovakia to be the favourite of the following match, but, at the same time, they overestimate it and underestimate the guests. Thus, we bet on the victory of Luxembourg with “a +1 goal handicap” (odd: 2.09).
