Nuno Borges
The Portuguese player is a solid mid-tier competitor in modern tennis, currently ranked 33rd in the world at 27 years old. Borges began his season at the tournament in Hong Kong, where he reached the second round. He then made a stronger showing in Auckland, advancing to the semifinals.
At the Australian Open, Borges started with a hard-fought win against France's Alexandre Muller, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5, followed by a commanding victory over Australia’s Jordan Thompson, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. While Borges is in good form, defeating Alcaraz will require near-perfect tennis.
Carlos Alcaraz
The young Spaniard consistently sets ambitious goals, and nothing short of winning this major will satisfy him. Currently ranked third in the world, Alcaraz has already claimed four Grand Slam titles. The Australian Open remains the only major he has yet to conquer, with his best result being a quarterfinal finish last year.
Alcaraz has looked dominant in his first two matches of the tournament. In the first round, he defeated Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko 6-1, 7-5, 6-1, and in the second round, he crushed Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0, 6-1, 6-4.
Match Facts
- Borges has won six of his eight matches this season.
- Alcaraz has only played at the Australian Open this season, securing two wins in two matches.
- Odds for this match: Borges 16, Alcaraz 1.01.
Head-to-Head
The players have faced each other once, at the clay tournament in Barcelona in 2023. Alcaraz won comfortably, 6-3, 6-1.
Prediction
Borges is a significant underdog in this matchup, and overcoming the formidable Spaniard will be an incredibly difficult task. Alcaraz is in excellent form and is unlikely to face much resistance. I expect him to showcase his high level of play and advance to the next round without any major issues. My prediction is for Alcaraz to win with a -7.5 game handicap.
