Heidenheim's crisis has significantly deepened. The team, which was one of last season's biggest surprises in Germany, is now struggling to stay afloat, as many predicted before the start of the season. Martin Schmidt’s side has collected just 10 points and sits in 16th place. They are five points clear of the direct relegation zone but trail the safety of 15th place by just one point, keeping their hopes alive.
Heidenheim started the season on a positive note with two wins, but things have since gone off track for this modest team. In the last round, they were predictably thrashed 5-2 by Bayern Munich, following a 4-0 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.
It is evident that Heidenheim lacks the resources to compete successfully on three fronts. After winning their first three matches in the Conference League, their form has deteriorated. While a 2-0 loss to Chelsea was expected, the 3-1 defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir was disappointing.
