Alexander Zverev
This season, Zverev didn’t capture any Grand Slam titles, a pinnacle he’s still chasing, although he did reach a final once and a semifinal another time. He did, however, clinch titles in Rome and Paris. Just this past week, Zverev climbed to the No. 2 spot in the world rankings, surpassing Alcaraz. At 27, he’s playing high-caliber tennis and has won the ATP Finals twice before, making him a strong contender here as well.
Andrey Rublev
Rublev kicked off the year by winning the tournament in Hong Kong and later added a title in Madrid to his tally. At times, he displayed solid-level tennis, with a few lost finals along the way. However, he continued to struggle on the Grand Slam stage, where his performances have traditionally been less impressive.
This year, Rublev’s name often made headlines due to his controversial behavior rather than standout results. He secured a spot in the ATP Finals only because Djokovic withdrew due to injury. Though sometimes alternates can surprise, Rublev has lost three of his last four matches, so expectations for a breakthrough here are modest.
Match Stats
- Zverev has won 37 of his 49 matches this season.
- Rublev has 32 victories out of 47 matches this season.
- The odds for this match are as follows: Zverev to win: 1.3, Rublev to win: 3.6
Head-to-Head
The two have a solid history, with Zverev leading 6-4 in their encounters. They last met in the ATP Finals last year, where Rublev fell to Zverev in straight sets.
Prediction
I agree with the odds that favor Zverev in this matchup, primarily because he’s in solid form and has been more consistent than Rublev this season. While Rublev has the capability to deliver a powerful performance and potentially defeat any opponent, I don’t expect a standout showing here. I’ll bet on Zverev to win with a -3 game handicap.
