History of volleyball at the Olympic Games
Volleyball, in both men's and women's tournaments, was first introduced at the Olympics in 1964. In the first two tournaments, the winner was determined in a tied tournament, and thus the Soviet Union team triumphed twice in the men's tournament. In the women's tournament, Japan and the USSR won the first two tournaments.
At the 1972 Munich Games, a play-off stage was already introduced, which, with some changes, is still in place today. It is noteworthy that the USSR team remains one of the most successful volleyball teams of the tournament to this day: three golds, two silvers and one bronze, along with Brazil, which has three golds and a silver each.
The reigning winner of the men's tournament is the French team, which defeated the Russian team 3:2 in five sets.
